Close-up magic vs stage show: which suits your event?

You need entertainment for your event and you've heard about both close-up table magic and a central magic show. But what's the difference? And which suits your specific situation best? This article explains it clearly, so you can make an informed choice.

What is walk-around close-up magic?

With walk-around close-up magic, the magician moves through the venue and performs for small groups of 4 to 10 people at a time. At the bar, along the tables, in the foyer, wherever guests are gathered. The magic happens at 30 centimetres away, right in front of your eyes.

It is interactive, personal and accessible. Guests don't need to do anything but watch, and react (which they always do). Close-up magic is the perfect atmosphere-builder during a reception or cocktail hour.

  • Ideal for: reception, drinks, cocktail hour, networking event
  • Duration: 1 to 4 hours continuously
  • Group size: 10 to unlimited (magician circulates)
  • Atmosphere: intimate, cheerful, interactive

What is a central act or magic show?

With a central act, the magician stands on a stage (or in the centre of the room) and performs for the entire audience at once. Everyone watches simultaneously, everyone reacts simultaneously. It is theatre.

A magic show can range from 15 minutes as a surprising interlude to 90 minutes as a full evening programme. With interaction, humour and spectacle, a stage show is the most memorable entertainment any event can offer.

  • Ideal for: after dinner, as the highlight of the evening
  • Duration: 15 to 90 minutes
  • Group size: 20 to 500+ people
  • Atmosphere: theatrical, spectacular, collective

How do you choose the right format?

The choice depends on three factors: the type of event, the structure of the evening and the budget.

Do you have a formal dinner with a tight schedule? Then a central act of 30-45 minutes after the main course fits perfectly. Are you organising a networking event or cocktail party without fixed seating? Then walk-around close-up magic is the best choice.

And if budget allows: combine both. Sudesh Roman regularly delivers evenings where he performs close-up magic during the reception and then takes the stage with a show after dinner. This way your guests enjoy entertainment all evening long.

Practical: what do you need?

For close-up magic you need no extra provisions, just guests and space. For a central act, a small stage area or open floor is useful, possibly with microphone and lighting. Sudesh Roman is happy to guide you through the technical preparation.

  • Close-up magic: no extra technical requirements
  • Stage show: stage or open floor, microphone preferred
  • Combination: time slot planning in consultation
  • Sudesh helps with optimal evening scheduling

Close-up magic and a central magic show are completely different experiences, and it is precisely that combination that makes an event complete. Sudesh Roman is happy to advise you on the format that best suits your venue, your guests and your evening programme.
