A spectator silently picks a four-digit code, for instance his bank PIN. The magician looks at him, asks no questions, and calls out digit after digit. Impossible? Not entirely, but certainly not telepathy.

The technique: micro-expressions and statistics
The Codebreaker rests on two pillars. The first is statistical: people are predictable. Research shows that the digits 1, 3, 7 and 9 are over-represented in self-chosen codes. The digits 0 and 4 are rarely used. Combinations like 1234 and 1111 are so predictable that banks often forbid them.
The second pillar is observation. When the mentalist names a digit aloud, the spectator unconsciously reveals whether it's correct, with a tiny eye movement, a raised eyebrow, a held breath. These micro-expressions last less than half a second, but to a trained observer they are loud and clear.
- ✦Statistical bias: 1, 3, 7, 9 are far more common than 0, 4, 5
- ✦Micro-expressions: eye flicker, nose twitch, breathing
- ✦Calibration: first ask an innocent question to learn that person's 'tells'
The psychology: why you betray yourself
When someone thinks of a digit, the brain activates the same neural networks as when speaking it, only weaker. EEG research shows lips and vocal cords make minute muscle contractions during inner speech. A close observer can pick up these 'ideomotor' movements.
Moreover, the brain is poor at lying to sudden questions. If the mentalist says 'is it a 7?' at the right moment, confirmation flashes across the face before conscious control kicks in. The mentalist only needs to see that flash.
The show: timing is everything
In performance the mentalist alternates between statistical guesses (to find the right track quickly) and observation (to confirm). He talks fast, laughs, seems to hesitate, and uses every second to read the spectator's reactions. What looks like telepathy is actually a highly trained mix of psychology and game theory.
The Codebreaker is one of the finest examples of how mentalism uses real science. No camera, no accomplice, no hidden technology, only years of training to see what others miss.
