From occupational therapy to the stage

Gili initially studied occupational therapy, but his childhood love of magic won out. In 1991 he decided to focus fully on a career as a magician and cabaret artist, and in 1994 he took to the stage as part of the Revue of De Nieuwe Snaar.

After that he continued solo with shows of his own. He repeatedly reached the final of Humo's Comedy Cup, in 2000, 2001 and 2005, and was a semi-finalist at Cameretten 2005.

The unmasker of the paranormal

Gili also became known as a critic of the paranormal: he shows how fortune-tellers can deceive people. He does not say the paranormal does not exist, but that he himself has never experienced a genuine sixth sense.

He organised 'The Ball of the Clairvoyants', for which flyers without an address or date were sent out — because only true clairvoyants would find their way. Nobody turned up. On the Eén programme Café Corsari (2015), he had mediums 'sense' a murder that turned out to be a fictional story posted online days earlier: according to Gili, a case of hot reading.

Theatre and television

In 2012 Gili presented the programme ONmogelijk? on Eén, in which contestants had to judge the (im)possibility of challenges. He created shows such as Geboeid, Gilicatessen, Gili Drijft Uit, CTRL, Charlatan and Raar, hè?!.

Gili tours with his theatre shows through Belgium, the Netherlands and France. In 2019 he performed at the Avignon theatre festival and at the Apollo Théâtre in Paris with his French-language show 'Nous sommes tous des mentalistes'.

Gili proved that mentalism is at its strongest when sharp insight and humour come together. You will recognise that same blend of clever deception and genuine fun for the audience in the work of Sudesh Roman.
