From agricultural engineer to illusionist
Born into a well-to-do Brussels bourgeois family, Isbecque earned a degree as an agricultural engineer and initially worked in his father's business, but magic took an ever more prominent place. He first performed as 'Presto' and 'Marc Satanas, le Magicien Moderne', but eventually chose the name 'Klingsor', which brought him international fame.
On stage he was known as an illusionist, mentalist and manipulator, always accompanied by his wife Solange Deridder. After buying most of Kalanag's props in 1967, he brought a pastiche act in Kalanag's style and specialised in psychokinetic effects. He performed at the Paris Folies-Bergère and Olympia and toured Japan, America, Zaïre and Mexico.
Entrepreneur, collector and writer
Beyond the stage, Klingsor was a keen collector, organiser and proprietor of his own magic shop in Brussels. He was also the writer and publisher of the magic magazines Illusion (1957–1959) and Art & Illusion (1959–1965).
His collection included Robert-Houdin's legendary Orange Tree. He wrote numerous works on magic, including Effective Magic (1971) and, in 1993, Recollections of Kalanag, a tribute to his great inspiration.
A life full of titles and honours
In 1967 Klingsor became president of Belgian Ring 86 (the IBM circle of Brussels) and in 1999 he received the honorary title Président d'Honneur. In 1979 he presided over the 14th edition of FISM in Brussels and developed the illusions Chronos, Pythagore and the Mammouth Rising Cards.
His titles include president of FISM (1976–1979), International Vice-President of the IBM (from 1980) and honorary member of the Academy of Magic Arts / The Magic Castle in Hollywood. Until his death he remained obsessed with his passion for magic.
Klingsor was a titan of Belgian magic, both on stage and beyond it. You will recognise that same dedication to the craft in all its facets in the work of Sudesh Roman.
